One of our favorite goals at JM Construction is helping homeowners add value to existing homes. One of the easiest ways to do that without upending an already finished space is to look below the surface. Basements offer a treasure trove of possibilities—what better way to bring new square footage and added value than to make the most of what you already have?Check out these five ways to realize your home’s “down under” potential.
Live It Up
Double up on the living space for movie-watching, shut-eye-catching, or just some peace and quiet. A change of pace in a different space is sometimes the only catalyst needed to get your loved ones together—and basements often provide the open floor plan needed for additional gathering spaces. Cover cold concrete with radiant floor heat and tile (get tips on choosing tile here). Make ceiling heights appear higher with recessed lighting. Reduce the stair traffic with a basement bathroom.
Whatever you need in order to spread out (or down) with your expanding family, JM Construction has a wealth of ideas to encourage additional gathering by making the most of your basement space.
Play It Up
From media rooms and game spaces to playrooms and home gyms, we’ve had a lot of fun just building the basement spaces, let alone the joy that comes knowing that you’re about to descend into your favorite diversion or pastime. Creatively incorporate more movie-watching, more imaginative playtime with your kiddos, or simply work out more often on your favorite exercise or weight-lifting equipment. Whatever floats your boat, we’ll anchor it down!
A Stellar Cellar
Basements offer a tryst for wine lovers, as they are often the perfect place to store your growing collection. Whether your basement lends itself to a “passive” wine cellar (relies on the natural underground environment of your space), or additional cooling in warmer months, options abound. Making the room both utilitarian and beautiful is where a trusted contractor comes in. At JM Construction, we have experience in wine cellar renovations, including our recent project in Weston, pictured here.
Subterranean Suite
In-law suites are becoming one of the most requested remodels in the Boston MetroWest area. (Interesting fact: Almost 20% of people in the US live with multiple generations under one roof). Whether you have aging family members or just frequent visitors, a basement is an ideal spot for an in-law suite, especially if it has the flexibility to include a simple second kitchen in addition to the usual living room, bed, and bath, as guests could be completely independent.
Expressive Area
From making a living to creating for fun, we don’t often “make room” for expressive spaces in our homes. Some of the most unique spaces we’ve had the pleasure of creating have included complete art studios, libraries with cozy reading nooks, recording and performance studios, home gyms, and craft/sewing rooms. Whatever your muse, we would love the chance to help you descend into an otherworldly space where you can get away from it all in just a few steps. Ready to “get down” to business? We would love to hear from you!
