Practical Storage Design for a Style-Driven Teen
Project Overview
This closet was designed for a very tall high schooler involved in the Drama Club, with a strong sense of style. To begin, we assessed deficiencies across the bedroom, ensuite, and closet, as well as within the laundry and dressing processes. Key priorities included incorporating a pull-out full-length mirror into an efficient layout. While a closet hamper is often a helpful addition, it was not imperative in this case, as another suitable location existed between the ensuite and the closet.
The growing shoe and hat collection became a major focus, with an emphasis on maximizing every square inch of the space, including vertical storage, due to the closet’s limited footprint. The decision to hang all items—other than lounge and sportswear—was a calculated one. Ensuring ample room for 28 pairs of pants, 30 shirts, and 6 jackets allowed the biweekly laundry service to remain sufficient.
The Results
Ensuring that every item had a dedicated location and adequate space made it easy to recognize when purging was needed. Accessory drawers prevent small items such as watches and cuff links from getting lost, while also providing a collection spot for collar stays, wayward buttons, and a sewing kit. Additional storage was thoughtfully allocated for specific oversized items, including luggage and extra bedding. This well-designed closet makes getting ready and out the door quick and effortless, while also maintaining clear oversight of the wardrobe, garment turnover, and personal collections.
