2022 Kitchen remodel for Perry family

Medfield Family Kitchen and First Floor Remodel

In many people’s minds, it’s never a good time to begin a home remodel. It can be a major disruption to your life and with the wrong company can be a long-term, stressful endeavor. But with JM Construction, the process is so easy that Medfield homeowners Sue and Adam Perry wished they had done it even sooner!

The Perrys’ 1997 colonial home was in need of a major upgrade. In particular, the kitchen was outdated and needed to be gutted and completely redone. They wanted something clean and modern, but put off renovating for years because they were afraid of their lives being disrupted. “The way it went was so smooth, I would have done this five years sooner,” Sue said about the experience when everything was said and done.

From 90s to Timeless

The kitchen is a room where you want a timeless look, and unfortunately, the Perrys’ kitchen was stuck in the 90s. However, by working with our design-build team, they were able to create a classic, timeless look.

Pretty much everything got an upgrade from top to bottom. New cabinets with a fresh color scheme of Nordic white and steel blue stand out against the polished maple hardwood floor. The white tile backsplash rises from the fantasy blue quartzite countertops and continues to the ceiling, making the room appear taller and brighter.

It all goes fantastically with the white hood insert and stainless steel sink, double oven, and refrigerator. Meanwhile, the Ascendra top knobs in flat black add not only a nice little contrast, but are solidly-made to allow for easy grip for the cabinet drawers.

The Kitchen Island

The kitchen island is the standout new feature. With a solid, matching quartzite countertop, it feels natural in the center of the room. People can sit and chat while the Perrys cook, or the space can be used for food preparation, reducing mess and clutter.

Speaking of reducing clutter, the island features thoughtful storage components such as a vertical spice rack that efficiently optimizes space and keeps spices and oils easily accessible and well organized.

Kitchen Inspiration for Renovations

A First Floor Overhaul

The kitchen wasn’t the only thing that experienced updates, however. The entire first floor got an upgrade thanks to the renovation process. The layout was completely redone, with barrier walls knocked down to expand the space with an open floor plan. The hardwood floors in the kitchen were chosen to match the pre-existing hardwood floors, making the transition between the areas feel seamless. New doors, including a sliding door to the backyard, were also installed, so everything feels new and revitalized.

Separating the kitchen from the living room is a low counter, allowing the spaces to feel like their own areas while remaining open and perfect for conversations when friends are visiting.  A 24” dry bar beverage fridge was inserted under the counter, so it’s convenient to hand out drinks when entertaining.

A Collaborative Process

All of this incredible work couldn’t have been done without the collaboration between the Perrys and JM Construction. “From the beginning, the experience with JM Construction was on point,” Adam said. “As homeowners, it was certainly an extensive project for us, and we felt that Jeff and his team treated it as they would for their own property. Throughout the process JM’s team never let us down.”

Sue agreed, stating, “We felt like we were just as much in control of [the renovation] as they were.” They were consulted on everything and always kept in the loop. The project was set up in the Buildertrend app that managed the documentation, payment system, change orders, and a schedule, as well as tracked all communication. There were also weekly site meetings and a site manager who checked in daily.

Helping the process was the fact that construction didn’t begin until every item was ordered and had arrived, so the Perrys weren’t needlessly inconvenienced and renovations could be completed on schedule. When construction did begin, we built them a high functioning temporary kitchen with a sink with hot water so they could continue living at the house. This allowed the Perrys to have as little disruption to their daily lives as possible, making the experience much more enjoyable for them.

The Final Result

When construction was completed, the Perrys were absolutely thrilled with the result. “The aspects that we like the most from our renovation? Everything,” Sue raved. She said that people ooh and ahh over the new countertops, and they make much better use of the space.

Even after the construction was completed, the relationship between the Perrys and JM Construction remains strong. “Post project JM has checked in a few times and on one of those calls we mentioned a couple of small items/issues that had come up,” Adam said. “They certainly were not JM’s responsibility, but JM put a solution in place.”

The Perrys have been loving their new kitchen since 2022, and we’re thrilled to have made the design build process as stress-free and enjoyable as possible for them.
